Quantitative assessment of heat tolerance in new rice varieties through field survey during natural extreme heat events

摘要: Heat-induced spikelet sterility has become an increasing concern for rice productivity under global warming, especially for new varieties introduced to high-temperature regions. During the hot summer of 2022 and 2023, we conducted field surveys of 62 new rice varieties being promoted in the middle and lower Yangtze River regions of China. Our study recorded the seed-setting rate (SR) at maturity as well as the initial heading date (10 %) and full heading date (80 %) for all varieties. Higher day temperatures extended the heading duration, while higher night temperatures shortened it, leading to significant inter-annual variation in heading duration. Elevated day temperatures significantly reduced SR, while moderately higher night temperatures had a positive effect. The current temperature response function for SR (TRFSR) does not perform well across a wide range of rice varieties due to ecotype-specific temperature thresholds. To address this, we developed a model that integrates heading distribution with a daily-step Horie-type TRFSR, utilizing variety-specific normal distribution parameters and the semi-lethal temperature (T50). The improved coupling model accurately estimated SR across varieties, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 6.32 % and anR2 of 0.81. The T50 ranged from 34.89 degrees C to 43.24 degrees C, with a significant difference observed between non-hybrid japonica and both hybrid indica and hybrid japonica-indica rice. Our study provided an open-access pipeline for quantitatively evaluating rice heat tolerance across a large number of germplasms, supporting crop modeling and breeding programs.
