Patterns of fish functional diversity and its responses to environmental gradients in offshore waters of the Yangtze River Estuary

摘要: Trait-based diversity approaches are considered to offer more valuable insights than species-based methods. Based on data collected during 2012-2021, this study applied three indices, i.e., functional richness (Fric), functional evenness (Feve), and functional divergence (Fdiv), to analyze the variations and environmental drivers of fish functional diversity in offshore waters of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). The results revealed that Fric was more affected by species numbers, whereas Feve and Fdiv were mainly influenced by the distribution of high-biomass species within the functional space. A decrease in species number reduced the chances of including similar traits species within a community, thus weakening the ecosystem's recovery ability. Dissolved oxygen and depth were identified as main environmental factors driving variations in the fish functional diversity. The results are expected to enhance our understanding of the changing patterns and its underlying mechanisms of fish functional diversity, thereby benefiting the conservation of fish diversity in the YRE.
