摘要: Increasing the proportion of semi-natural habitats may sometimes fail to increase natural enemy numbers and support biological control in crops managed with insecticides. In this study, we explored how landscape composition and configuration affect aphid mummy numbers (reflecting parasitoid activity) and parasitism rate (a biocontrol indicator) in cotton fields in northwestern China, considering insecticide use. In 2018, 2019, and 2021, we surveyed the density ofAphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), mummified aphids (parasitized A. gossypii), and insecticide use frequency in 65 commercial cotton fields. We also measured landscape variables in circular zones at radii of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 km around the fields, including the proportion of crop or semi-natural habitats (grassland, woodlot, and fallow land) (composition), and the edge density of semi-natural habitats (configuration). We found that increasing insecticide application frequency significantly reduced the aphid mummy density. But increasing the edge density of grassland habitats within a 1.5 to 2.0 km radius significantly increased the density of aphid mummies in cotton fields, whereas the proportion of grassland in the landscape did not have that effect. Parasitism rates, however, were not significantly related to either insecticide applications frequency or landscape variables. These findings highlight the importance of minimizing insecticide use in pest management to conserve parasitoids. They also suggest that edge characteristics of semi-natural habitats near cotton fields are important to safeguard natural enemies from insecticide use and promote sustainable agriculture.
