Effects of anthropogenic climate change on the compound drought and heat events in different agricultural regions of China

摘要: With global warming, the frequency of compound drought and heat events (CDHEs) has increased in China. The impact of anthropogenic climate change (ACC) on CDHEs has garnered widespread attention. However, existing studies mainly focus on global or continental scales or only address the influence of ACC on a single attribute of CDHEs. Hence, we analyzed the impact of ACC on CDHEs from three perspectives (frequency, cumulative intensity, and average intensity) in China. The results showed that: (1) Because of the ACC, the frequency of CDHEs has increased by 3% to 10% in most regions of China. Furthermore, the cumulative intensity of CDHEs increased more than 3, and the average intensity slightly increased by about 0.1. (2) Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas (SC_P), Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (YG_G), the South China (HN_P), and the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River region (CJ_P) were the four agricultural regions which were severely affected by ACC, especially the SC_P and YG_G. (3) Due to ACC, the frequency of temperature-dominated CDHEs has increased by more than 2.5% in over half of the regions in China. SC_P, YG_P, and HN_P exhibited the most pronounced increases, exceeding 5%. However, the ACC's influence on the frequency of drought-dominated CDHEs was limited. This study highlights the role of ACC in the increase of CDHEs and provides crucial references for policy formulation to mitigate CDHEs risks.
