摘要: Coat protein (CP)-mediated resistance is one of the well-developed strategies in genetic engineering of plants against virus diseases. Transgenic plants expressing CP genes of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) or cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) have been shownto be resistant to infection of the respective virus (Powell-Abel et al. 1986; Cuozzo et al. 1988). TMV and CMV are two major viral pathogens affecting tobacco plants in North China. We have thus developed transgenic tobacco plants resistant to infection of both TMV and CMV by simultaneously expressing CP genes of these two viruses in plants (Fang et al. 1990 ). Virus-challenge experiments conducted in fields and molecular analyses of expression of TMV and CMV CP genes were then performed to select virusresistant transgenic homozygous plant lines from the progeny of the primary transformants (Fang et al. 1993). In this paper we report a series of field trials on the progeny of the selected homozygous lines to verify the inheritance of the virus-resistance traits and to examine the quality of transgenic tobacco plants. We also report a large-scale field test using the homozygous line N364, showing significant protection of tobacco plants against virus infection.
