摘要： Agro-biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, and marine biotechnology will bring the second tide to biotechnology application after the pharmaceutical industry initiated the first tide. At present, considerable achievements in crop genetic engineering in the areas of resistance to disease, insect and adversity have been obtained in many countries. For the future, the focus of the research will be shifted from present "resistance" to "quality". Noticeably, the work of genetic mapping in rice and other crops will be completed before 2005, and the following research will be focused on gene structure and exploitation and utilization of gene. The intellectual property right of agro-biotechnology might be an important factor for market access and trade barrier in the international trade in the future. The strategic contending for genetic resources and gene in international competition is becoming a "gene war without smoke of gunpowder".
