YELLOW LEAF SYNDROME IN SUGARCANE CULTIVARS OF REUNION ISLAND: DYNAMICS OF SCYLV IN THE FIELD AND IN THE PLANT

摘要: A survey was conducted from 1998 to 2000 to determine the distribution and progress of yellow leaf syndrome (YLS) in Réunion Island. Tissue blot immunoassay (TBIA) was used to detect SCYLV in the three major cultivars R570, R575 and R579. The virus was widespread throughout the island. The incidence of infection varied between 10% and 100% according to cultivar and location, and remained relatively stable over the two years. These findings suggest that sugarcane cultivars in Réunion may differ in resistance to infection by SCYLV, that infected plants do not recover from one crop to the next on ratooning, and that the virus is mainly propagated by infected seedcane rather than by insects. The distribution of SCYLV in plants was investigated using seedcane taken from infected plants of four cultivars (R570, R575, R577 and R579) and two detection techniques (TBIA and RT-PCR). One month after germination of the seedcane in an insect-proof greenhouse, the virus was distributed in all parts of the resulting plants of all four cultivars. This distribution of SCYLV within the plants did not vary during the ten to eleven months of growth.
