Growth and development of root system and above-ground organs in relation to year-on and year-off apple trees

摘要: Systematic studies were made on year-on and year-off apple trees of 'Ralls Janet' in full fruit period for 5 years, so as to explore the relation of growth and development between root system and above-ground organs. For year-off trees, both root system and new shoots had three growth peaks in yearly cycle, their growth was alternate to each other. For year-on trees, roots had 2-3 growth peaks and new shoots had 1-2 growth peaks, and the growth peaks of roots and spring shoots were overlapped. For weak year-off trees, roots had only one growth peak and new shoots had two peaks, root growth peaks in spring and autumn disappeared. The first root growth peak for year-on and year-off trees was consistent with full flowering and leaf expansion. For year-off trees, nutrition deficiency appeared before full growth of spring shoots because of insufficient reserved nutrients in plants and daily growth rate of new roots decreased to its lowest value during the growth peak of spring shoots. For year-on trees, there were sufficient reserved nutrients in plants in spring and new roots grew vigorously, promoting the growth of leaf area of spring shoots. When new shoots grew slowly or stopped growth, root system entered its second growth peak. Fertilizing in early autumn would be very important for improving nutrient reservation.
