摘要: For many years it was disputed whether animals do actually feel pain or not, and later on whether analgesics should be administered or if it was better to withhold analgesics in order to keep the animal immobilized for better healing. Now a day, fortunately, there is a broad consensus that animals do feel pain and that regardless of species, pain management of animals subjected to various painful procedures is of outmost importance for several reasons, including animal welfare considerations, improved convalescence and improved final outcome. However, there is no general consensus on how much pain is elicited by various diseases or surgical procedures and pain is generally evaluated in a subjective non-systematic way by using the horses' demeanor and pulse as the main criteria.
