摘要: More than a rich source of essential nutrients, bovine colostrum also supplies the new-born with biologically active components which are essential for specific functions. The most important bioactive components in colostrum include growth factors andantimicrobial factors (Pakkanen and Aalto, 1997). At weaning, the piglet is submitted to nutritional and environmental stresses which induce marked structural and immunological changes in the gut (Pluske et ai, 1997). Profound endocrinal changes also occur at this time (Dunshea, 2003). This critical period has been controlled over decades by the use of in-feed antibiotics. However, their total ban in the EU since January 2006 requires alternative solutions. In this context, bovine colostrum whey was used as growth promoter in weaning piglet diet to study its influence on growth performance and the circulating hormones.
