摘要: The shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis is distributed along the Chinese coast throughout the Bohai and Yellow Seas. As a valuable marine crustacean, F. chinensis thus plays a key role in the economy of northern China. However, since White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) was first found in China in 1992, shrimp viruses have caused significant economic losses in the major shrimp farming regions of the world, not only in F. chinensis, but also in other shrimp species. To circumvent these disease problems, cultivating a new variety of shrimp with disease tolerance has become an important focus of attention. The problems of slow-growing shrimp, WSSV, and low survival rate of infected shrimp puzzled the industry and hampered development of F. chinensis culture. This was a major problem for the shrimp culture industry in China, requiring cultivation of good varieties with improved disease resistance. Therefore, YSFRI has conducted several generations of selection to develop a new breed of F. chinensis with increased growth, improved WSSV resistance and an increased survival rate. This program was initiated in1998 and by the end of 2009, several generations had been successively selected. The new breed was approved by the Chinese National Aquaculture Variety Approval Committee and named "Huanghai No.2".
