摘要: Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a novel promising biomarker for acute kidney injury* and inflammation2 in human medicine. The NGAL protein is found in the neutrophil granules, where NGAL is produced during maturation in the bone marrow.3 The expression of NGAL has been found in several normal tissues inclusive the airways, where it provides protection against bacterial infection and is found to modulate oxidative stress.4 Further research has investigated NGAL as a potential biomarker in human asthma, and studies have found NGAL as a promising biomarker for distingue between asthma subtypes.5’6 Equine asthma is characterized by various degree of airway obstruction, airway inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and thusshares many similarities with human asthma. The predominant asthmatic phenotype in horses is the neutrophilic type, which makes NGAL an interesting potential biomarker. In horses, a NGAL enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been validated for detection of NGAL in serum.
