Improved photosynthetic water-use efficiency of potato due to partial stomatal closure induced by ABA signalling at mild soil water deficits

摘要: Potted potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) were grown in a climate-controlled glasshouse to investigate leaf gas-exchange characteristics during progressive soil drying. Stomatal conductance (g_s), light-saturated photosynthesis (A), leaf water potential(PSI_1), and xylem sap ABA concentration ([ABA]_(xylem)) were determined in well watered (WW) and drought-stressed (DS) plants. During soil drying g_s decreased linearly with increasing [ABA]_(xylem) when there was no detectable decrease in PSI_1; Alg_Sincreased linearly with decreasing g_s until the latter reached 0.2 mol m~(-2) s~(-1); below this point, it decreased sharply. It is concluded that during mild soil water deficits, g_s of potato is controlled by xylem-borne ABA. As a consequence of A being less sensitive to soil drying than g_s is, A/g_s increased at mild soil water deficits.
