Effects of Combination of Steam Explosion and Alkali Pretreatment on Enzymatic Hydrolysis, Sugar Yields, and Structural Properties of Reed Straw

摘要: The difficulty in the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass due to its complex cross-linking structure, while green and efficient pretreatment mode is the main means to improve its utilization efficiency. We investigated the effects of a mild alkali (CaO and Na2CO3), steam explosion (SE), and the combination of SE and mild alkali on the sugar yield and lignocellulose structural properties of reed straw (RS) in this study. All the pretreatments decreased the cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content but increased the reducing sugar content of RS (P < 0.05). Similarly, the pretreatments increased the reducing sugar content of RS after enzymatic digestion and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency compared to the untreated RS, and the order of the increasement of reducing sugar of each pretreatment method is co-pretreatment > SE pretreatment > alkali pretreatment (P < 0.05). Collectively, both mild alkali pretreatment and SE pretreatment could degrade the lignocellulose content and change the physicochemical structure of RS.
