Introduction and utilization of IRAT/CIRAD upland rice cultivars

摘要: Based upon the situation of most planting area of planting rice in Yunnan, China located in the South and Southwest Yunnan which belong to frontier region, mountainous area, minority nationality region; poor and low yield area between 21 degrees N and 24 degrees N as well as between 800-1 600 m above sea level, more than 90% belonged to japonica, breeding objective should be japonica rice of high-yield, resistance to blast, tolerance for drought and low soil fertility, adaptation to the situation of South Yunnan condition. According to the policy of simultaneous introduction and breeding, 69 accessions of IRAT upland rice were introduced and evaluated from 1988 to 1995. After several years experimental evaluation and field demonstration, Certification and Evaluation as well as Acceptance were approved in Yunnan Province in 1994. In 1995, IRAT 104 was released by Agricultural Department of Yunnan Province formally and became the first improved variety released formally by authorities in Yunnan. Besides direct utilization, some progress was achieved using IRAT upland rice cultivars as dwarf, blast resistance and wide compatibility resources to improve Yunnan local upland rice. Out of 45 promising breeding lines of upland rice, forty have IRAT 104 or IRAT 216 as one parent. And among 934 advanced elite lines bred in 1994, 649 lines have IRAT 104, IRAT 170, IRAT 177 or IRAT 216 as one parent.
