Taxa composition and ecological traits of filamentous diatoms in a regulated fragmented river, China

摘要: Filamentous diatoms generally form filamentous or chain like groups by the thorn or protrusion structure between adjacent cells, which are important components of phytoplankton communities in large river ecosystems. In order to explore the indicating functions of filamentous diatoms in response to cascade dam constructions in aquatic ecosystems, we investigated the 13 cascade dams along the main channel of the East River (China) during November 2018 (dry period) and July 2019 (wet period). A total of 18 filamentous diatoms (including variants) were identified, including 14 species of Aulacoseira and 4 species of Melosira, among which Aulacoseira granulata was predominant. The biomass of filamentous diatoms could be a good bioindicator for seasonal and spatial vari-ations of water environments, since it appeared apparently higher in high water retention time (WRT) conditions (dry seasons or downstream). As for each cascade, the maximum or minimum biomass often appeared at stations closest to the dam. The filament length of Aulacoseira was longer than that ofMelosira, which was mainly caused by morphological and structural differences. The filament length of A. granulata could be a good bioindicator of seasonal variations, since it was larger in dry seasons than that in wet seasons. The filament length of M. varians could be a good bioindicator of seasonal and spatial variations of water environments, since it appeared apparently more often in high WRT conditions (dry seasons or downstream). Moreover, both biomass and morphological traits of filamentous diatoms were mainly impacted by physical factors, which implied that the nutrient conditions of this fragmented aquatic ecosystem is beyond the demands of algal growth. In conclusion, the abundance and ecological traits of filamentous diatoms are suitable for identifying the spatial and seasonal characteristics of aquatic environ-ments greatly affected by cascade dams.
