摘要: The present study explored the effects of sodium butyrate on meat quality improvement and intestinal injury induced by high-level fava beans in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). A total 240 uniform-sized tilapia (368.33 +/- 10.95 g) were randomly allocated into four groups and fed experimental diets in pond cages for ten weeks. The dietary treatments included: L0 (0 % fava beans), L1 (60 % fava beans), L2 (60 % fava beans +2 g/kg sodium butyrate), and L3 (60 % fava beans +4 g/kg sodium butyrate). Each treatment group has three replicates, with each replicate containing 20 fish. Results demonstrated that 2-4 g/kg sodium butyrate supplementation (L2/L3) significantly enhanced muscle texture (hardness, springiness, chewiness) (P < 0.001), upregulated TGF-beta 1/Smads pathway genes (col1 alpha 1a, col1 alpha 1b, col1 alpha 2, smad4a) (P < 0.05), increased muscle collagen content (P < 0.001), and decreased drip loss (P < 0.001). Concurrently, sodium butyrate improved intestinal health by strengthening tight junction proteins (zo-1, occludin, claudin-14), modulating gut microbiota, enhancing antioxidant capacity and digestive enzyme activity (P < 0.05), suppressing apoptosis (P < 0.05), and reducing inflammation (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed significant positive associations between intestinal health genes (bcl2, zo-1, occludin) and muscle texture or type I collagen synthesis genes (col1 alpha 1a, smad4a, tgf-beta 1a) (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that sodium butyrate mitigates intestinal damage caused by high fava bean intake, enhances tilapia meat quality, and highlights a strong link between intestinal health and meat quality. The study supports sodium butyrate as a functional feed additive for improving aquaculture productivity in tilapia fed fava beans-rich diets.
