Insight into construction and nitrogen removal performance of Navicula-Bacteria PN/A system

摘要: Partial nitrification (PN) can provide nitrite for anammox in ammonia wastewater. PN needs oxygen supplied by mechanical aeration, while microalgae can produce oxygen through photosynthesis. Therefore, it is visionary to introduce microalgae into partial nitrification and couple with anammox for cost-effective autotrophic nitrogen removal. The innovation of this study lies in the use of Navicula sp., which was discovered in an algal bioreactor in our laboratory. Our previous research demonstrated its significant nitrogen removal potential. Given its limited exploration in wastewater treatment, it is meaningful and innovative to make it the experimental microalgae. This study involves three steps: establishing a PN system, developing a Navicula-bacteria PN system, and constructing a Navicula-bacteria partial nitrification coupled with anammox (PN/A) system. One ammoniaoxidizing bacteria genus, Nitrosomonas, two nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) genera, Nitrobacter and Nitrospira, and two anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria genera, Candidatus Kuenenia and Candidatus Brocadia, along with six denitrifying bacteria genera, were found. The addition of hydroxylamine successfully inhibited NOB, achieving a nitrite accumulation efficiency of 80 %. In the phase of construction of the Navicula-bacteria PN system, the effects of ammonia load and light intensity on nitrogen removal performance were explored, with optimal conditions found to be 50 mg/L ammonia and 3000 lx light intensity, and realized 90 % nitrite accumulation efficiency. The Navicula-bacteria PN/A system can treat an ammonia load of 120 mg/L and achieve a total nitrogen removal efficiency of 83 % under a light intensity of 1000 lx, with 63.4 % of the nitrogen removal attributed to anaerobic ammonia oxidation and 37.6 % contributed by denitrification. This study provides theoretical support for the construction of a microalgae-bacteria system to achieve efficient autotrophic nitrogen removal.
