Sulfur dioxide fumigation promotes GABA accumulation and energy metabolism to delay quality deterioration in postharvest table grapes

摘要: Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) can delay the quality deterioration of postharvest table grapes. So far, however, there has been little discussion about the mechanism behind how SO 2 influencing postharvest metabolic processes. This research explored the possible impacts of SO 2 fumigation on the accumulation of gamma -aminobutyric acid (GABA), encompassing GABA shunt and polyamines degradation, as well as its effects on energy metabolism in table grapes stored at 0 +/- 1 degrees C. The results indicated that SO 2 fumigation decreased decay incidence, weight loss, and berry abscission, while also maintaining higher firmness, total soluble solids and titratable acidity content in table grapes. Improved GABA level in the SO 2 -fumigated fruit was a consequence of the promotion of the GABA shunt, including elevated glutamate (Glu) content, activated glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and GABA transaminase activities and up-regulated the expressions of VvGAD1 , VvGAD4 and VvGABA-T1 . However, the elevation in GABA content was not associated with polyamine degradation, as diamine oxidase (DAO) and polyamine oxidase (PAO) activities were reduced and VvPAO expression was inhibited in the SO 2 -fumigated fruit. SO 2 fumigation also enhanced the contents of putrescine (Put), spermine (Spm) and spermidine (Spd) via increasing arginine decarboxylase (ADC) activity and VvADC expression, as well as inhibiting ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and VvODC expression. In addition, SO 2 fumigation promoted energy metabolism, as indicated by elevations in the levels of ATP and EC, activities of H + -ATPase, Ca 2+ -ATPase, succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and cytochrome C oxidase (CCO), along with the transcription of VvH + -ATPase , VvCa 2 + -ATPase , VvSDH5 , VvSDH6 , VvCCO6A , VvCCO6B-1 and VvCCO6B-2 . These findings suggest that SO 2 could delay the quality deterioration in table grapes by promoting GABA accumulation and energy metabolism.
