Monitoring diurnal variations and displacement of surface urban heat islands using 10-minute himawari-8 data for urban climate adaptation

摘要: Continuous monitoring of surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) throughout a diurnal cycle is required owing to the high temporal variability in urban thermal environments. However, traditional thermal satellite images, with their limited temporal resolution, are insufficient for capturing high spatiotemporal variations in the land surface temperature (LST). Recent improvements in the spatial and temporal resolution of Himawari-8 observations make it possible to provide a 10-minute temperature data covering the whole diurnal cycle. This research estimates 2 km spatially distributed LSTs across all four seasons using 10-minute Himawari-8 data in Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo. The influence of different rural reference types-cropland, forest, and all rural areas-on SUHI estimation in Tokyo is also evaluated. While SUHI intensity varies slightly with reference type, spatial patterns remain highly consistent (Pearson r > 0.88), indicating robust spatial characterization. Furthermore, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulations and a multiple regression model with dummy variables are employed to quantify the contributions of meteorological and environmental factors to diurnal variations in SUHI. The results indicate that SUHIs shift downwind, with this effect being particularly pronounced in coastal cities of Tokyo, where SUHI displacement exceeds 15 km at noon across all four seasons. The WRF simulations and multiple regression analysis highlight the key role of cumulative 10-m wind speed, 10-m wind direction, solar shortwave radiation, SUHI intensity, and city-specific characteristics in driving SUHI displacement across the three cities. These SUHI characteristics suggest that diversified urban, vegetation, and water landscape elements should be designed by taking account in urban wind path with enhanced ventilation potential to mitigate the thermal superposition effect caused by the UHI displacement in future urban plan projects.
