Potential gender- and age-specific prebiotic effects of three different Dendrobium officinale leaf polysaccharides on intestinal microbiota

摘要: Dendrobium officinale has been extensively consumed as a nourishing tonic. In this study, gender- and age-specific prebiotic effects of three Dendrobium officinale leaf polysaccharides (DOP1, DOP2, DOP3) on intestinal microbiota were studied in vitro. Fecal samples were collected from 32 healthy individuals of different genders (female and male) and age (20-35 and 40-60). The results revealed that DOPs increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, including Bifidobacterium, Prevotella, Faecalibacterium, and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, and reduced that of harmful genus Escherichia-Shigella, and then promoted short-chain fatty acids production. DOP1 showed a better effect on the elderly, DOP2 showed more comprehensive effects, and DOP3 was effective on the young. Acetic acid and propionic acid levels in the gut microbiota of older males were more significantly increased by DOP2 and DOP3, while butyric acid was more significantly increased in older females. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the precise nutritional utilization of DOPs.
