Hydrodynamic interactions between a sorting grid and a demersal trawl

摘要: The selectivity of demersal trawls is poor. To address this, installing selective devices such as sorting grids can lead to separated fishing, reduced bycatch, and improved trawl selectivity. In this study, the hydrodynamic performance of a demersal trawl equipped with a sorting grid was investigated using numerical simulations based on the finite element method. A series of physical model tests of a model trawl based on Tauti's law were conducted in a towing tank to verify the accuracy of the numerical simulation. The hydrodynamic interaction between the sorting grid and demersal trawl was analysed, and its effect on the performance of both the trawl and grid was explored. The results showed that installing a sorting grid could significantly impact the trawl codend. Specifically, the codend section fell downwards in front of the grid installation position. Furthermore, the maximum tension of the codend net increased substantially from 93.77 N (without sorting grid) to 267.66 N. This rise occurred primarily in the bottom and front parts of the grid, particularly at the connection points and near the position of the lacing rope. However, the drag force and headline height of the entire trawl remained unaffected. It was also observed that the actual working angle of the sorting grid was smaller than its installation angle. Based on these findings, it is recommended to set the buoyancy-weight-ratio of the sorting grid to 2, which can effectively improve the hydrodynamic performance of the codend. This study provides a scientific basis for the application of selective devices, which is beneficial for reducing the pressure of fishing operations on ecosystems and promoting the sustainable development of demersal trawl fisheries.
