Dynamic effects of monopiles and sacrificial piles on Lagrangian residual velocity in an idealized rectangular bay

摘要： Previous studies have primarily addressed the effects of sacrificial pile shapes and arrangements on scour depth, with limited to their influences on Lagrangian residual velocity (LRV) and Lagrangian-averaged vorticity (LAV) dynamics. A monopile enhances surface inflow and diminishes bottom outflow, while sacrificial piles mitigate seaward circulation before the monopile, reducing long-term scour risks. The lateral LRV induces flow separation on both sides of the monopile, contrasting with homogeneous flow in no-pile scenarios. Sacrificial piles modify cross-estuary Lagrangian mean local acceleration and horizontal nonlinear advection terms, forming staggered high-magnitude southward and northward independent vortices that generate small-scale LRV structures. Monopile and sacrificial piles enhance vertical LRV via water column perturbations. LAV exhibits notable reversal structure before and after the monopile due to stagnation and bypass effects, attenuated near the bottom. Sacrificial piles markedly modify the Lagrangian mean time variation of vorticity (vLtvv) and Lagrangian mean advection of relative vorticity (vLarv), shifting the dominant surface-and middle-layer balance from a monopiledominated vLarv-vLbac (Lagrangian mean barotropic curl term) interaction to one that prominently involves vLtvv. In the bottom layer, transverse sacrificial piles induce a balance between vLarvand Lagrangian mean tilting term (vLtilt), whereas triangular pile arrangements preserve the original vLarv-vLbac balance.
