Spatiotemporal variation and lateral transport of POC in an important mariculture area in China

摘要: Mariculture not only provides an important source of food for humans, but also impacts the carbon cycle and carbon sequestration in the coastal ecosystem. The lateral transport of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the cultured areas to the open seas is crucial for promoting the processes of carbon sequestration. Using remote sensing data and numerical model, the spatiotemporal variation pattern and lateral transport flux of POC were investigated to understand the regulatory mechanisms of potential carbon sequestration in Sungo Bay, a typical shellfish-seaweed mariculture area in China. The results showed that the concentration of POC in the surface of the bay exhibited a decreasing trend from the inner bay to the open sea year-round. The monthly concentrations of POC in Sungo Bay ranged from 484.9 mg/m3 to 606.9 mg/m3, which were higher than in the shelf seas. Clear intra-seasonal variations of POC were represented by variation coefficients of 3.1 %, 12.9 %, 3.5 % and 16.4 % in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. Moreover, the highest POC concentration occurred during the late growth period of seaweed (spring and summer) and the lowest POC concentration occurred in the early growth period of seaweed (winter). The lateral transport flux of POC at the boundary of offshore mariculture with the shellfish and seaweed showed a net output of approximately 12.07 Gg C throughout the year, wherein the shellfish bio-deposition and seaweed debris are the essential components exported from Sungo Bay. Furthermore, the net output of POC may benefit from the seasonal residual current, mainly driven by the tides, as well as the seasonal wind and thermohaline conditions. This study describes the lateral transport flux of POC from the shellfish-seaweed mariculture areas to the open seas, which provides insight into the potential contribution to ocean carbon sequestration when considering shellfish-seaweed mariculture for climate change mitigation.
