Cleaner air, happier life? Evaluating the impact of air quality on migrants' subjective quality of life

摘要： Drawing on a novel dataset from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) 2017, along with air quality monitoring data and other city-level datasets, this study investigates the impact of air quality on labor migrants' subjective quality of life in China. Overall, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship between air quality levels and subjective well-being, with a threshold for AQI compliance rate at 75.75 %. This indicates that the marginal benefit of improved air quality diminishes beyond this point. Specifically, this observed pattern is mainly driven by two opposing effects: the positive health effect and potential income loss due to industrial upgrading. Furthermore, we reveal that men, the elderly, married individuals, and more educated migrant workers are more sensitive to air quality improvements.
