The sustainable supply of lithium carbonate in China - Extracting brine-type lithium resource from salt lakes in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau

摘要: China is facing severe carbon emission reduction tasks, it has a huge lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) supply gap. Salt lakes in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (Q-X-P) have abundant lithium resource reserves. Extracting brine-type lithium resource in Q-X-P provides a sustainable Li2CO3 supply approach in China. In this study, we have collected 51 salt lakes in Q-X-P. The natural conditions, extraction processes, market environment and relevant policies for extracting brine-type lithium resource from these salt lakes were analyzed. The results showed that the average altitude of these salt lakes has reach 4548.96 m, 76.47% of salt lakes are located in arid areas, 84.31% of salt lake distribution areas have freeze-thaw erosion, high ecological sensitivity areas account for 68.63%. The concentration of Li+ accounts for 0.44% of salinity in these salt lakes. Based on above conditions, many extraction processes have been applied to extract Li2CO3 from these salt lakes. Life cycle assessment results showed that selecting appropriate extraction process based on natural conditions can effectively reduce resource consumption, ecological risks and environmental impacts in the production process. In addition, current market environment and relevant policies provide favorable conditions for the development of brine-type lithium resource extraction industry in Q-X-P. This will promote technological innovation and production capacity upgrades in related fields. In the future, the investment in brine-type lithium resource extraction industry in Q-X-P should be increased to achieve a sustainable supply of Li2CO3 to the Chinese market.
