Effect of exogenous acylhomoserine lactone 3-oxo-C14-HSL on the performance of biofilm in moving bed biofilm reactor

摘要: Biofilms are economical and efficient nitrogen removal technologies utilized in water treatment. However, their practical applications are limited by the slow colonization and growth of film-forming bacteria, as well as the long start-up process. Quorum sensing (QS) signaling molecules play a vital role in regulating various microbial behaviors. This study investigated the impact of the exogenous addition of the QS signaling molecule 3-oxo-C14HSL on the start-up and biofilm growth of aquaculture moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR). The results showed that introducing 400 ng/L of 3-oxo-C14-HSL significantly increased the adhesion of aquaculture effluent (AE) microorganisms to cell culture plates (72.9 -74.2 %, P < 0.01). By adding 3-oxo-C14-HSL, the thickness and weight of the MBBR carrier biofilm, as well as the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and AHLs, were significantly increased, significantly shortening biofilm formation time. Metagenomic analysis showed that under the regulation of exogenous 3-oxo-C14-HSL, the relative abundance of major nitrogenremoving bacteria, nitrogen metabolism, and QS-related genes in the biofilm significantly increased, improving the performance of the MBBR in the treatment of AE. The total nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, and nitrate removal rates were as high as 90.30 %, 93.47 %, and 97.35 %, respectively. This study revealed a strong correlation between QS signaling molecules based on AHLs and MRRB biofilm formation, nitrogen metabolism, and microbiota reconstruction, providing a potential biofilm enhancement strategy for MBBR treatment of AE with practical applications.
