Effects of air replenishment on the swimming behaviour of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) confined underwater

摘要: Mariculture has grown substantially in China, especially with the transition to deeper-offshore aquaculture systems. This study investigates the effects of various air replenishment methods on the swimming behaviour of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in submerged cages under laboratory conditions. A preliminary control experiment was conducted to assess the necessity of air contact of the experimental fish. To evaluate how air delivery protocols influence buoyancy regulation, two air replenishment strategies were compared subsequently: static air dome (SR), which maintains a fixed air dome through passive gas retention, and dynamic air replenishment (DR), which combines the air dome with active airstone-driven aeration. Behavioural parameters, including average swimming speed (SS), swimming angle (SA), and swimming trajectory (ST) were analysed over 15 days. Results showed that the ST of the experimental group (EG) exhibited significant changes characterised by distinct circling swimming patterns on the 8th and 15th days. In contrast, the control group (CG) had no clear swimming pattern throughout the experiment. The SS and SA of the EG significantly increased, whereas the CG remained stable. In DR treatments, SS was highest in DR-6d and lowest in DR-1d, while the largest SA was observed in SR, and the smallest in DR-1d. These results indicate that dynamic air replenishment, especially the DR-1d protocol, effectively mitigates negative buoyancy-induced abnormal swimming behaviours. Findings suggest that the implementation of frequent dynamic air replenishment enhances buoyancy regulation and reduces energy expenditure in submerged cages, improving fish welfare.
